Perimenopause & Menopause

Understanding Perimenopause and Menopause

The transition into menopause is a natural, inevitable part of every woman’s life, but that does not mean you have to endure disruptive symptoms in silence. At Ladies First Health Care, we view this phase not as an ending, but as a new chapter.

Dr. Saqib Ahmad and our dedicated team are here to help you understand the changes happening in your body, validate your experiences, and provide modern, evidence based treatments so you can navigate this transition with confidence, comfort, and vitality.

Understanding the Transition

While they are often talked about as one event, perimenopause and menopause are distinct phases of your hormonal journey:

  • Perimenopause: This is the transitional phase leading up to menopause, often beginning in a woman’s early to mid 40s (though it can start earlier). During this time, your ovaries gradually begin to produce less estrogen, and hormone levels can fluctuate unpredictably. You may still get a period, but your cycles may become irregular, heavier, or lighter. This phase can last anywhere from a few years to a decade.

  • Menopause: You officially reach menopause when you have gone 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period. At this point, your ovaries have stopped releasing eggs and producing most of their estrogen. The average age for menopause in the United States is 51, but it is normal for it to happen anywhere between the ages of 45 and 55.

Common Symptoms

Because estrogen receptors are located all over your body from your brain to your bones to your skin the drop in hormones can trigger a wide variety of physical and emotional symptoms. You might experience:

  • Vasomotor Symptoms: Hot flashes, sudden sweating, and night sweats.

  • Sleep and Mood Disruption: Insomnia, fatigue, irritability, anxiety, or feelings of depression.

  • Physical Changes: Unexplained weight gain (particularly around the abdomen), thinning hair, or dry skin.

  • Vaginal and Urinary Symptoms: Vaginal dryness, discomfort or pain during intercourse, and an increase in urinary tract infections (UTIs) or bladder leakage.

  • Cognitive Shifts: Brain fog or difficulty concentrating

Your Personalized Care Plan

Every woman experiences menopause differently. Some breeze through it with mild symptoms, while others find their daily lives severely impacted. Dr. Saqib Ahmad takes the time to listen to your specific symptoms, review your personal medical history, and discuss your lifestyle to build a tailored management plan.

Depending on your unique needs, your care plan may include:

  • Lifestyle and Wellness Guidance: Targeted advice on nutrition, supplements (like Calcium and Vitamin D for bone health), and exercise to manage weight and protect your heart.

  • Non-Hormonal Therapies: Prescription medications and natural remedies proven to reduce hot flashes and improve sleep without using hormones.

  • Menopausal Hormone Therapy (MHT): Formerly known as HRT, this involves replacing the estrogen and progesterone your body is no longer making. Modern hormone therapy is safe and highly effective for many women when prescribed carefully, and we offer various forms including patches, pills, and creams.

  • Vaginal Health Treatments: Localized, low-dose estrogen creams or non-hormonal moisturizers to safely restore vaginal tissue elasticity and resolve painful intercourse.
